URBAN LANDSCAPES Paintings
The paintings that follow were part of 'Dwellings' one of my solo exhibitions, theme that I have further developed for the subsequent solo exhibition 'Urban and Rural Dwellings'. These paintings are in their majority urban landscapes of ancient towns in Spain and Portugal, countries where 70% of my DNA comes from, and South America where my remaining DNA is from. Ever since childhood I have been attracted to urban landscapes not only because of their aesthetic aspect, but also very much by the history behind them. When I visit other countries, the first impact I receive is visual. Then the curiosity of the human history behind them joins the visual impact. Those buildings have so much meaning and so many stories of the different peoples who inhabit and share them. From generation to generation, these dwellings evolve and the needs and desires of their people are imprinted on them, and that is what I see and paint.
After a summer in France and Andalucía (south of Spain), I came home to Houston and started the series “Toits du Nord, Toits du Sud” (Roofs of the North, Roofs of the South) where I concentrated mainly on roofs which is what fascinated me the most in French architecture. I was also very captivated by the simplicity of lines, the very strong contrast between the brightness of the enormously tall white walls against the deep blue sky, and the contrast with the very dark and sharp shadows they spill on themselves and the roofs. I find these tall walls so impressive, as if they have almost a noble bearing. You look up to them, as if they always had a grand story to tell of their genteel beginnings, and the people who built and inhabited them.
