3rd Place Award at the VAA 13th Juried Invitational Exhibition (August 03 – 30, 2020)
My Painting “Secluded in Interior Design VII” received the 3rd Place Award at the Visual Arts Alliance VAA 13th Juried Invitational Exhibition. Dr. Volker Eisele was the Juror. “Secluded in Interior Design II” is also part of this virtual exhibition which opened 03 August 2020 and will be on display until 30 August 2020. Both paintings are part of my Urban Landscapes Series.

Below is the transcript of Dr. Eisele's words as he presented the award:

“Third Prize goes to Silvia PintoSouza “Secluded in Interior Design Number VII”.  Bravo! Yes, Bravo!
And what I like about this painting is the, again, the ambiguity of a young woman sitting in the middle of the painting and she is surrounded by pieces of architecture. And the architecture is very vague. It is a… can’t really make it out, there are some windows, potentially, but then it is negated by larger color fields. And she sits right into it! And, there was another painting as a companion: She looks down from that perch and it gives a feeling of vulnerability. You sitting in this living machines, caught in a way, and it is almost apocalyptic and it comes to… Vulnerability comes out. And if you know, these days there is a lot of vulnerability, economically, I mean, talking about the protests they say no more rent for anybody, I am just saying this is not what that is, but it is a lot of vulnerabilities, within basically geometric fields. So, I thought it was well done”.

It was my great pleasure to welcome the large and generous public that came to my show ‘Dwellings’. I was very proud and thankful for the opportunity to exhibit my latest paintings and share the moment with such knowledgeable public. The theme of the exhibition was related to my love for history, for old architecture and my recently discovered DNA. Realizing that my heritage was 70% Iberian, and having visited Spain and Portugal in various occasions, it felt natural to me to dig into ‘my past’ through images of ancient Spanish and Portuguese towns. Vejer de la Frontera, a Moorish town in Spain and the old neighborhood of Ribeira in Porto, Portugal, were the fuel for the show. They had all what I love to paint: Interesting geometry, high contrast of light and shade, harmonious color and lots of potential for developing other more ‘modern’ versions of the original. The result was ‘Dwellings’, which I will continue to develop further: In every project, there is always room for improvement!
